Profit
Price to Profit Calculator
Enter a selling price and your costs. The calculator subtracts every cost line and shows the profit and profit margin you keep from that price.
Profit is what is left after every cost of the sale is taken out of the price the buyer pays. The margin shows that profit as a share of the price, so you can compare listings of different prices fairly.
Formula
Profit = selling price − product cost − shipping cost − (price × marketplace fee %) − (price × payment fee % + fixed fee). Margin = profit ÷ selling price × 100.
How it works
Start with the price the buyer pays. Subtract what the item cost you, what shipping it costs you, and the two fee lines. The marketplace fee is a percentage of the price; the payment fee is a percentage plus a small fixed amount per order. What is left is your profit on that sale.
Worked example
Selling price $40.00, product cost $12.00, shipping $6.00, marketplace fee 13% and payment fee 2.9% + $0.30. Marketplace fee: $40.00 × 13% = $5.20. Payment fee: $40.00 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.46. Profit: $40.00 − $12.00 − $6.00 − $5.20 − $1.46 = $15.34. Margin: $15.34 ÷ $40.00 = 38.35%.
FAQs
What is the difference between profit and margin?
Profit is the dollars you keep from one sale. Margin is that profit as a percentage of the selling price, so the same dollar profit is a stronger result on a cheaper item than on an expensive one. Margin lets you compare listings of different prices fairly.
Should the buyer-paid shipping be included in the price?
Only include money you actually receive. If the buyer pays shipping separately and you pass it straight to the carrier, enter your net shipping cost (what you pay minus what the buyer paid) or leave shipping at zero and enter the price as the item price only.
Why is the payment fee a percentage plus a fixed amount?
Most payment processors charge both: a percentage of the payment and a fixed amount per transaction. The fixed amount matters most on small orders, where it takes a bigger share of the sale.
Does this calculator include marketplace fees on shipping?
It applies the marketplace fee percentage to the selling price you enter. Some marketplaces also charge their fee on the shipping amount the buyer pays, so if that applies to you, enter the price plus buyer-paid shipping as the selling price.
My profit is negative. What does that mean?
The price does not cover your costs and fees. Raise the price, cut a cost line, or both. Use the listing-price calculator to work backwards from the profit you want.
