POD Pricing Calculator

Set the margin you want to keep, and this calculator works backwards to the retail price that delivers it.

—

Formula

Retail price = (base cost + fulfillment shipping + other per-item fees) ÷ (1 − target margin as a decimal). For example, a 40% target margin means dividing total cost by 0.60.

How it works

Enter your per-item costs and the margin you want, as a percentage of the retail price. The calculator divides total cost by what is left after your margin, which is the only price at which that margin holds. A margin is a share of the selling price, not a markup on cost, so adding 40% to cost would give a smaller margin than 40%.

Worked example

Base cost $12.00, fulfillment shipping $3.00 and no other fee give a total cost of $15.00. For a 40% target margin: $15.00 ÷ (1 − 0.40) = $15.00 ÷ 0.60 = $25.00. Profit at that price is $25.00 − $15.00 = $10.00, and $10.00 ÷ $25.00 = 40.0%. The $12.00 base cost is the example t-shirt production cost in Printify's own help article on profit per sale, and Printify recommends keeping at least a 40% profit margin.

FAQs

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of cost. A $15 cost sold at $25 gives a $10 profit, which is a 40% margin but a 66.7% markup. This calculator works in margin, so the price it gives hits the margin you entered.

Why does the price jump so much at high margins?

Because the formula divides by what is left after margin. At a 50% margin you divide cost by 0.50 and double it; at 80% you divide by 0.20 and multiply it by five. Very high target margins quickly produce prices buyers will not pay.

Should shipping be inside the price or charged separately?

Either works if you are consistent. If the buyer pays shipping separately, leave fulfillment shipping out of this calculation only when the buyer's shipping payment covers it in full; if you offer free shipping, the fulfillment shipping must sit inside the retail price, as it does here.

What margin should I target?

Printify's help article recommends keeping at least a 40% profit margin to help the business grow. Treat that as a starting point, not a rule: check what comparable products sell for before locking a price.

Does this include marketplace fees?

Only if you put them in the other fees box. If you sell on Etsy or another marketplace, add its expected per-item fee there, or use the POD via Etsy calculator for the full stack.
