Craft Labor Cost Calculator
Turn your making time into a real labor cost, with a complexity factor so fiddly, detailed work is not priced like simple work.
Formula
Labor cost = hourly labor rate × hours × complexity factor. The base labor is rate × hours; the complexity factor scales it up for work that needs more skill, patience or precision than straightforward making.
How it works
Enter your hourly rate and the hours one item takes. Choose the complexity factor that matches the work: 1.0 for simple making, 1.25 for moderate detail, 1.5 for intricate work and 2.0 for highly detailed work. The result is the labor cost to carry into your full price — it is not the selling price on its own, because materials and overhead still need adding.
Worked example
Hourly rate $25.00 × 2.5 hours = $62.50 base labor. With a moderate-detail complexity factor of 1.25, labor cost = $62.50 × 1.25 = $78.13. Interpretation: the extra $15.63 over base labor is the premium for detail — if you priced this item at base labor alone, you would undercharge for the skill the detail requires by $15.63 per item.
FAQs
How do I choose a complexity factor?
Use 1.0 for simple, repetitive making, 1.25 for work with noticeable detail or finishing, 1.5 for intricate patterns or fine work, and 2.0 for highly detailed, one-of-a-kind work. Be consistent so similar items get similar factors.
Is the complexity factor the same as charging more per hour?
In effect, yes: multiplying by 1.25 is the same as valuing those hours at 1.25 times your usual rate. The factor just keeps your base rate visible while you adjust for difficulty.
Does labor cost include materials?
No. This calculator covers time only. Add material cost and overhead separately to reach your full cost per item.
What hourly rate should I use?
Use the rate you want your making time to be worth, not zero. Compare it with what skilled craft or freelance work pays in your area, and raise it as your skill and demand grow.
Why does detailed work cost more per hour, not just more hours?
Because detailed work also takes more concentration, skill and rework risk. Hours alone capture time; the factor captures the extra care that time requires.
