Work out Amazon's referral fee on a single sale by category, including the $0.30 minimum and the media closing fee where it applies.
The result isolates Amazon's selling fee — the referral fee every Amazon sale pays — from everything else. It is not profit: product cost, fulfillment or shipping, storage and advertising still come out of the amount you keep. Use it to compare categories before you list, since the same price can carry a very different fee in another category.
Formula
Referral fee = category rate × total sale price, or $0.30, whichever is greater. Media items add a $1.80 closing fee per item. Total Amazon selling fee = referral fee + closing fee (media only).
How it works
Enter the total price the buyer pays, including any shipping you charge, because the referral fee is calculated on the total sale price, not the item price alone. Pick the category rate closest to your product; several categories use tiered rates that change at price thresholds, so if your category is tiered, enter the rate that applies at your price or check Seller Central. Tick the media box only for books, music, video, DVD and software items.
Worked example
A $40 item in a 15% category: the referral fee is 15% of $40.00 = $6.00, which is above the $0.30 minimum, so you keep $34.00 before product and fulfillment costs. A $1.50 item in the same category: 15% is $0.225, which is below the $0.30 minimum, so the minimum $0.30 applies. At $4.00, 15% is $0.60, which is above the minimum, so $0.60 applies.

What is Amazon's standard referral fee?
15% of the total sale price in most categories, with a $0.30 minimum per item. Electronics and computers pay 8%, while some categories pay more or use tiered rates.
Is the referral fee charged on shipping?
Yes. It is calculated on the total sale price, which includes the item price plus shipping charged to the buyer and gift wrap, but not sales tax.
What is the $1.80 closing fee?
A per-item fee added on media categories — books, music, video, DVD and software — on top of the referral fee. It does not apply to non-media products.
Does the referral fee depend on my selling plan?
No. Both Individual and Professional sellers pay the same referral fee; the plans differ in that Individual sellers pay $0.99 per item sold while Professional sellers pay $39.99 per month with no per-item plan fee.
Why is my category rate different from 15%?
Amazon sets referral rates by category and sometimes by price band within a category. Check your product's category in Seller Central's fee schedule, since a misclassified listing can be charged at the wrong rate.
