Wholesale Freight Cost Calculator
Spread a bulk freight bill across every unit in the shipment and see the landed cost per unit.
Formula
Freight per unit = total freight cost ÷ units in the shipment. Landed cost per unit = product cost per unit + freight per unit. Total landed cost = landed cost per unit × units. The same freight bill looks very different per unit depending on how many units share it, which is why shipment size is part of the calculation.
How it works
Enter the total freight bill for the shipment, how many units are in it, and the product cost per unit. The calculator spreads the freight evenly across the units and shows the landed cost you should use when you set a wholesale price.
Worked example
Total freight $480.00, 400 units, product cost $10.00 per unit. Freight per unit is $480.00 ÷ 400 = $1.20. Landed cost per unit is $10.00 + $1.20 = $11.20. Freight is $1.20 ÷ $10.00 = 12.0% of the product cost per unit. Total landed cost for the shipment is $11.20 × 400 = $4,480.00. Interpretation: pricing from the $10.00 product cost alone would understate cost by $1.20 per unit, so the wholesale price must clear $11.20 before it earns anything.
FAQs
What is landed cost?
Landed cost is the product cost plus the cost of getting it to you, here the freight share per unit. It is the cost figure your wholesale price must beat, not the product cost alone.
Why does freight per unit fall when the shipment grows?
The freight bill is spread over more units, so each unit carries a smaller share. That is one reason larger shipments can support lower wholesale prices.
Does this calculator include packaging or handling?
No, only the freight bill you enter. Add packaging, warehousing or handling per unit to the product cost if you want those in the landed cost.
What if different items share one freight bill?
Splitting by unit count, as here, suits identical units. For mixed items, split the bill by weight, volume or value instead, then run each group separately.
Should freight per unit use ordered units or received units?
Received units. If some units arrive damaged or short, the surviving units must carry the full freight bill, which raises the true freight per unit.
