Handmade
Handmade Material Cost Calculator
Find the true material cost of one item — including the offcuts and scrap you pay for but cannot sell.
Formula
Material cost per item = (total material spend ÷ items made) × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). The waste percentage accounts for offcuts, mistakes and unusable material that you paid for but that never reaches a finished item.
How it works
Enter what the whole batch of materials cost, how many finished items that batch produced, and what share of material is wasted. The calculator first finds the raw cost per item, then adds the waste share, so the per-item cost reflects what you actually spent, not just what ended up in the finished piece.
Worked example
Total material spend $120.00 for 10 items gives raw material of $120.00 ÷ 10 = $12.00 per item. With 15% waste, material cost per item = $12.00 × 1.15 = $13.80. The waste adds $1.80 per item. Interpretation: pricing at $12.00 of material would under-recover by $1.80 on every item — over 100 items that is $180.00 of material cost quietly absorbed by you.
FAQs
What counts as waste or scrap?
Offcuts, broken pieces, test pieces, spilled or spoiled material, and material trimmed away during finishing. If you paid for it and it is not in the finished item, it belongs in the waste share.
How do I estimate my waste percentage?
Track one batch: weigh or cost what you bought against what went into finished items. Start with 10% to 15% for fabric, yarn or wood offcuts if you have no records yet, then replace it with your measured figure.
Does this include packaging materials?
Only if you include packaging in the batch spend. Otherwise add packaging as overhead in your full price, so it is not missed.
What if I buy materials in bulk for many products?
Split the bulk spend across the items it actually serves, and run this calculator per product. Mixing unrelated products into one batch hides which item is really carrying the cost.
Is waste the same as a mistake I can avoid?
No. Some waste is unavoidable in cutting and making, and that is what this percentage covers. Repeated mistakes are a process problem to fix, not a cost to quietly pass on.
