eBay Profit Calculator
Find your profit and margin on an eBay sale after the final value fee, any promoted listings cost, product cost and shipping.
Profit on eBay is decided by the gap between the sale total and everything the order costs: the final value fee, any ad rate, the product, the label and the extras. A listing can look profitable on item price alone and still lose money once the fee on charged shipping is counted.
Formula
Profit = (item price + shipping charged) − final value fee − promoted listings cost − product cost − postage label cost − other per-order costs. Profit margin = profit ÷ (item price + shipping charged) × 100. The final value fee uses the non-Store category rate on the sale total plus the $0.30 or $0.40 per-order fee, with 2.35% on the portion above $7,500 in most categories.
How it works
Enter the sale as the buyer sees it, then your costs as you actually pay them. The calculator applies the category final value fee to the full sale total, adds any promoted listings percentage you set, and subtracts product, label and other costs. Changing the category or the ad rate shows immediately how much of the margin those two choices control.
Worked example
An $80 book with $10 shipping charged, product cost $38, label $9, other costs $3, no promotion: the sale total is $90.00. The final value fee at 15.3% is $13.77, plus the $0.40 per-order fee = $14.17. Profit is $90.00 − $14.17 − $38.00 − $9.00 − $3.00 = $25.83. Margin is $25.83 ÷ $90.00 = 28.7%.
FAQs
Why does this profit calculator ask for shipping twice?
Because the two shipping numbers do different jobs. Shipping charged to the buyer raises the sale total and therefore raises the fee. Shipping you actually pay for the label is a cost. When you offer free shipping, the first number is zero and the label cost still comes out of the item price.
What is the promoted listings rate for?
If you promote a listing, eBay charges your chosen ad rate on the sale as well. Leave it at 0% for an unpromoted listing. A promoted sale at 5% on a $95 order adds $4.75 of ad cost on top of the final value fee.
Does this include the cost of returns?
No. Returns, refunds and the $20 dispute fee for a lost dispute are not in this calculation. If your category has a steady return rate, add an average return cost per order to the other costs box.
Can I use this for a Store subscription?
Only by adjusting the rate. This calculator uses non-Store final value rates. Store subscribers pay lower rates in many categories, so check your Store fee schedule and treat the result as a conservative estimate until you enter your own rate.
Is margin calculated on the item price or the sale total?
On the sale total, meaning item price plus shipping charged. That matches how the fee is charged and keeps listings with free and charged shipping comparable.
